Base44 vs. Idea to Production

A founder, operator or team member who wants a working internal tool or customer app with a database and sign-in in one place, without choosing a hosting or database provider, and is comfortable with the app living on Base44’s backend.

AI app builder, owned by Wix since June 2025, that writes a React front end on its own built-in backend — database, sign-in, file storage, functions and hosting — from chat

Choose Base44 if

  • You want database, sign-in, file storage, functions and hosting in one place — a new app is live on a base44.app address from the moment it is created, with nothing to provision.
  • You want in-app AI agents without wiring them yourself — agents that read and update records, call functions and answer on WhatsApp or Telegram are a documented feature.
  • You are learning by doing, or iterating on a prototype, and a free plan with 25 messages a month or Starter at US$16 a month billed annually is the right size of commitment.
  • You have a developer, or will soon, who can take the GitHub sync or ZIP export of the React and Vite project on the Builder plan and continue from there.

Choose Idea to Production if

  • One named contact who built the application and will fix it — Base44 states its support does not provide hands-on debugging or fixes for your individual app code, prompts or architecture.
  • Backups with restores we have actually run, files included, on every plan — Base44’s Data version history restores a table 7 days back on Elite and 30 on Enterprise, and a restore of files is not documented.
  • Monitoring that reaches a person, and capacity that follows demand rather than an integration-credit balance that makes email, LLM and agent calls fail when it runs out.
  • Roles and permissions from day one, with SSO and audit logs ready when the first enterprise customer asks — without stepping up to Elite for single sign-on.

Capability Base44 (Wix) Idea to Production
Who it is for Base44 (Wix) Yes Anyone who wants to build a web or mobile app by chatting, with no coding required, from a free plan with 25 message credits a month to Enterprise workspaces. Idea to Production Yes Founders and businesses whose application has to work in front of a paying customer.
How you build Base44 (Wix) Yes You describe the app in chat; Base44 writes a React and Vite front end on its own backend — entities, authentication, file storage and Deno backend functions — and hosts it on a base44.app address. Source Idea to Production Yes You describe it in plain English; we build it and keep it running.
Time to a first working version Base44 (Wix) Yes Every app is live on a free base44.app address from the moment it is created and goes public with the Publish button; the free plan has 25 message credits a month. Source Idea to Production Partly A first working version in days, not minutes — it has real accounts and real data from the start.
Pricing model Base44 (Wix) Yes Free plan with 25 message and 100 integration credits a month; Starter US$16, Builder US$40, Pro US$80 and Elite US$160 a month billed annually, 20% below monthly billing; Enterprise by contract; the running app’s email, LLM, image and agent calls draw on integration credits. Source Idea to Production Yes A licence plus the resources your application actually uses. No salary, no equity.
Code ownership and export Base44 (Wix) Partly Export as a ZIP or two-way GitHub sync of the React and Vite project, both on the Builder plan or higher; the database, sign-in, file storage and Deno functions run on Base44’s backend, and running that backend yourself is not documented. Source Idea to Production Yes The source is yours, handed over in a form your own team can pick up and continue.
Hosting and custom domain Base44 (Wix) Partly Hosted on a base44.app subdomain on every plan; connecting a custom domain, with a certificate Base44 issues and renews, needs the Starter plan or above, and domains can be bought from Base44 or Wix. Source Idea to Production Yes Production and staging on your own domain with TLS, Canadian regions by default.
Accounts, roles and SSO Base44 (Wix) Partly Single sign-on for app users through OIDC — Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, GitHub or any OIDC provider — needs the Elite plan or higher; email and password, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple sign-in, admin and user roles and table-level permission rules come with the built-in backend. Source Idea to Production Yes Real accounts, roles and permissions from day one; single sign-on switched on when you need it.
Database and tested backups Base44 (Wix) Partly Data version history restores a table’s records to an earlier version, 7 days back on Elite and 30 days on Enterprise, and Base44 states it takes frequent automated backups for its own recovery; on lower plans a restore path is not documented, file storage is not mentioned, and a tested restore is not documented. Source Idea to Production Yes A backed-up database with restores tested, not assumed.
Monitoring, alerting to a person Base44 (Wix) Partly A Logs page records entity operations, user events, function calls, integrations, agent conversations and errors, and analytics keep visit data 7 days on Free and 30 on paid plans; uptime monitoring or alerting to a person when the app fails is not documented. Source Idea to Production Yes Watched from outside on a short interval, alerting to a person, not a dashboard.
Security patching and dependency updates Base44 (Wix) Partly A security scan on every plan lists data-permission, exposed-secret, dependency and code findings with upgrade recommendations, code vulnerability scanning from Builder; Base44 states the scan does not apply fixes automatically and that you are responsible for your app’s security. Source Idea to Production Yes Dependencies and security advisories applied on a schedule, forever.
Compliance evidence Base44 (Wix) Partly Base44 states SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification and GDPR compliance for its platform, with a DPA on request and a trust centre at base44.com/security; audit-log access through a Monitoring API is an Enterprise feature, data residency in the EU, UK or US is on Elite and Enterprise, and evidence for your app is not documented. Source Idea to Production Partly A written security overview and answered questionnaires today. SOC 2 Type II is in progress, not certified.
Payments, email, e-signature, support Base44 (Wix) Partly Stripe payments and Base44 Payments powered by Wix on the Builder plan and above, a built-in SendEmail integration, and OAuth connectors for Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion and Google Workspace on Builder and above; e-signature and support-desk integrations are not documented. Source Idea to Production Yes Thirteen categories built in — Stripe, Xero, Mailgun, Twilio, DocuSign, Intercom, Jira and more.
AI agents Base44 (Wix) Partly In-app AI agents that read and update records, call backend functions and search the web, with per-tool permissions, WhatsApp and Telegram channels, and per-user conversation history and credit usage from about 3 integration credits a message; scheduled agent runs and a spending limit per agent are not documented. Source Idea to Production Yes AI agents with credentials, limits, a schedule and an audit trail.
Who is responsible when it breaks Base44 (Wix) Partly Base44 states its support does not provide hands-on debugging or fixes for your individual app code, prompts or architecture; support is by ticket and Discord, with premium support on Elite and dedicated support on Enterprise. Source Idea to Production Yes The people who built it. One named contact, not a ticket queue.
Scaling Base44 (Wix) Partly The running app’s email, LLM, image and agent calls draw on monthly integration credits and fail with an error once the balance is used up; hosting capacity is not published, and Base44 states rate limits apply per person so capacity scales with the number of people using the app. Source Idea to Production Yes Capacity follows demand and is measured; ten users or ten thousand on the same application.
Deployment into your own cloud Base44 (Wix) Partly The app runs on Base44’s backend, with data stored in the US by default and EU or UK residency on Elite and Enterprise; the React front end can be hosted elsewhere and call Base44 through its SDK, and running the backend in your own cloud is not documented. Source Idea to Production No Not yet — on the roadmap. Today the application runs on our infrastructure. Source

After the build

The part that decides whether it survives a customer

What Base44 provides once the app exists

Base44 hosts the app on a base44.app subdomain, or on a custom domain with a certificate it issues and renews, from the Starter plan up. The built-in backend gives it a database, file storage, Deno functions, scheduled automations and sign-in by email, Google, Microsoft, Facebook or Apple, with OIDC single sign-on for app users on Elite. A Logs page and analytics show what happened; Data version history on Elite and Enterprise restores a table 7 or 30 days back. A security scan lists dependency and code findings for you to apply. The running app’s emails, LLM calls, images and agent messages draw on monthly integration credits and fail once they run out. Support is by ticket and Discord, and does not debug your app’s code.

What a real customer asks for that is not on that list

The first paying customer does not care which builder made the app. They want it up at two in the morning, and someone to have noticed first; alerting to a person is not documented. They want a restore that has been rehearsed, below Elite too, and a documented answer for files. They want the security scan’s findings applied, not listed. They want email to keep sending on a busy day rather than fail on an exhausted credit balance. Their IT wants single sign-on below Elite, an audit log below Enterprise, and a security questionnaire answered by a person who can sign it. None of that is a feature you prompt for; it is a job someone has to hold, every week, for as long as the application earns money.

Every application we build inherits the same five guarantees: Secure, Compliant, Reliable, Scalable, Efficient.

Already built on Base44?

We treat your prototype as the brief.

A working prototype is the best specification there is: it shows what you want rather than describing it. We start from what you have learned, not from its code, and you get a production application with real accounts, real data and somebody watching it.

Show us what you have

Questions people ask

Can you take over my Base44 app?

We treat it as the brief. A Base44 prototype is the clearest specification you can hand us — it shows exactly which screens, flows, records and roles you want. We rebuild from it with real accounts, a backed-up database and monitoring from the start, rather than inheriting generated code we did not write and cannot vouch for, or a backend we cannot operate.

Is Base44 a bad choice?

No. It is a good way to get a working app with a database, sign-in and hosting onto a URL in an afternoon without choosing any providers, to test whether anyone wants it, and to learn by doing. In-app AI agents and a security scan come with it. The question is only who runs it once someone is paying to use it, and how much of it lives on a backend only Base44 operates.

Can I export my Base44 code and leave?

Partly. On the Builder plan or higher you can export the project as a ZIP or keep it in two-way sync with GitHub; it is a standard React and Vite front end with backend functions written for Base44’s Deno runtime. The database, authentication, file storage and function hosting stay on Base44’s backend, which the front end calls through the Base44 SDK, and running that backend yourself is not documented. Base44 states that ownership of an app belongs to the person who created it.

Who is responsible for backups on Base44?

Base44 states it takes frequent automated backups for its own disaster recovery. What you can restore yourself is Data version history, on Elite and Enterprise only: a table’s records go back to an earlier version, 7 days back on Elite and 30 on Enterprise, with the current data saved first. A restore of files is not documented, and on Free, Starter, Builder and Pro a restore path is not documented either. Neither path documents a tested restore of your app, and testing one is what turns a backup into a recovery.

Can my customers sign in with their company SSO on a Base44 app?

Yes, on the Elite plan or higher. App users can sign in through OIDC with Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, GitHub or any OIDC-compatible provider, and a private app can auto-admit people who arrive through it. Below Elite, sign-in is by email and password, Google, Microsoft, Facebook or Apple. Admin and user roles, custom roles from fields on the User table and table-level permission rules are documented, so roles are something to set up and check in the built app.

What happens when my Base44 credits run out?

Message credits and integration credits are separate. When message credits run out you cannot send new prompts until the cycle resets. Integration credits are the ones your customers feel: Base44 states that once they are used up, any action in the running app that needs them — sending an email, an LLM call, generating an image, an agent message — fails with an error until the balance renews or you upgrade. Unused credits do not carry over. Idea to Production bills a licence plus the resources the application actually uses, and the application does not pause.
